A few years ago, I first set foot on Turkey’s Aegean coast and was immediately captivated by the relaxed, modern atmosphere of Izmir. Unlike the frenetic energy of Istanbul or the otherworldly landscapes of Cappadocia, Izmir’s initial impression was one of comfort and brightness—filled with sun-drenched, slightly salty sea breezes that made me instinctively slow my pace.
As someone who loves “slow travel,” I chose to spend a full week in Izmir exploring the city, strolling along the coast, soaking up the coffee culture, and visiting nearby ancient ruins. Looking back, every detail remains unforgettable.
Days and Nights Along the Aegean Coast
One of my favorite experiences in Izmir was walking along the coast. The waterfront promenade, known as the Kordon, is the city’s heartbeat; at any time of day—morning or evening—you can see locals jogging, walking their dogs, or simply sitting on benches, basking in the sun. During my first walk along the shoreline, I truly experienced the essence of “slow living”: the sea breeze gently brushing against my cheeks, sailboats drifting slowly in the distance, and the aroma of coffee mingling with the salty air—all of which put me completely at ease.
I particularly loved the seaside at dusk. As the setting sun painted the water in shades of red and seagulls circled overhead, the quiet murmur of nearby conversations created an atmosphere that was peaceful rather than lonely. I also rented a bicycle to ride along the long waterfront path; the sense of relaxation was far more profound than anything I’d felt in a bustling metropolis. Compared to the hectic pace of Istanbul, Izmir’s coastline allowed me to rediscover the precious “slow rhythm” of travel.
A Historical Journey to Ancient Ephesus
From Izmir, I made a special day trip to the nearby ancient city of Ephesus. The drive took about an hour, but the pastoral scenery and charming small towns along the way made the journey anything but tiring. Upon arriving at Ephesus, I was awestruck by the grandeur of the ancient site: the Great Theatre, the library, and the temple ruins—every stone seemed to tell a story from thousands of years ago.

As a history enthusiast, I strolled leisurely through the ancient city, closely examining the details of the bas-reliefs and columns while imagining what life was like here in the past. I found this slow, immersive approach to history far more rewarding than the typical “whistle-stop” tour of attractions. In the afternoon, I settled into a small café near the ancient site, ordered an iced Turkish coffee, and watched the steady stream of tourists visiting the ruins, savoring the fascinating blend of history and modernity.
Seaside Promenades and Coffee Culture
Back in downtown Izmir, I particularly enjoyed exploring the street-side cafés and small shops. The city’s coffee culture is unique; unlike the tourist-heavy scene in Istanbul, it is steeped in authentic local life. At one of my favorite small cafés, the owner personally ground the beans and brewed the coffee using the traditional Turkish method, resulting in a rich aroma without excessive bitterness. Whenever I sat by the window watching the crowds drift by, I would order a local treat—such as Izmir-style baklava—and savor it slowly, enjoying the city’s laid-back lifestyle.
Beyond coffee, I also sampled the local seafood. Thanks to the city’s proximity to the Aegean Sea, fresh fish and seafood are abundant. I highly recommend the grilled octopus and olive oil-dressed salads found in the small seaside eateries; these simple dishes left a lasting impression. Unlike fast-paced dining spots, the dining experience in Izmir allows you to truly savor the flavors and makes it easier to strike up conversations with friends or locals.
City Strolls and Market Explorations
Izmir’s Old Town and its markets were also daily highlights for me. Kemeralti Market, the city’s largest traditional bazaar, offers a wide array of spices, handicrafts, and fresh produce. I loved wandering slowly past the stalls, breathing in the scent of spices and picking out handmade souvenirs. The vendors here were welcoming yet unhurried; compared to Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, the atmosphere felt far more relaxed and friendly.

Wandering through the narrow alleys of the Old Town, I often encountered a blend of well-preserved Ottoman architecture and modern cafés. This fusion of old and new turned every outing into an exploration of a miniature open-air history museum. In the evening, the streetlights cast a glow over the cobblestones, creating a warm and tranquil atmosphere—perfect for a leisurely stroll or capturing memorable photos.
My Slow-Paced Journey in Izmir
My trip to Izmir gave me a new perspective on the meaning of “slow travel”: it is not about rushing to tick off tourist attractions, but rather about immersing oneself in the city’s rhythm, scents, and flavors. I loved taking morning walks along the coast, picking out snacks at the market at midday, savoring coffee in a café during the afternoon, and wrapping up the day with a stroll through the old town. The sea breeze, sunshine, history, and cuisine here allowed me to fully unwind and experience the true charm of this Turkish coastal city.
If you want to escape the peak tourist crowds and find a city where you can slow down and soak up a unique atmosphere where the modern and the historic intertwine, I highly recommend Izmir. Every street, café, and seaside view here is worth taking the time to explore at your own pace.
